What do the qualifications cover?
These qualifications aim to develop the knowledge and skills required when providing positive care for people with dementia and their families. The Level 2 Award provides an awareness of the causes and symptoms of dementia. The Level 2 Certificate builds on the knowledge gained from the Award, whilst developing skills needed in the workplace when working under supervision. Both qualifications are aligned to the National Dementia Strategy.
Who are they suitable for?
Anyone who wants to work in Social Care in either local authority or private care environments. They are also suitable for qualified practitioners who have not covered dementia care in previous qualifications.
What are the entry requirements?
Learners must be 16+ years old.
What are the start dates?
This course can be started at any point of the year and sessions will be arranged with the learner. If you are making a group booking, sessions to suit the learners can be arranged at their place of work.
How many credits are required to complete them?
The Award requires 8 credits and the Certificate requires 18.
How are they assessed?
They will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task.
Do you need to be working to take the qualifications?
To complete the Award, you do not need to be working as it is a knowledge only qualification. To take the Certificate you will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.
How long do they take to complete?
You can usually complete them in 6 months or less.
What related qualifications can you progress to?
The Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or the Level 3 Dementia qualifications.

What is the cost of this qualification?
The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia costs £120 and the Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care costs £270. If you are an adult social care agency you may be able to claim back the full cost of this course through the Workforce Development Fund.
Which type of job roles can you apply for on completion?
These qualifications do not qualify you to work in Social Care settings, but do support you working towards employment or to aid career development if you are a social care qualified practitioner.
