About this qualification
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to manage practice and lead others in adult health and social care provision or in children and young people’s services.
It has six pathways – three for adults and three for children and young people:
- Residential Services
- Advanced Practice
This qualification has been built to meet the apprenticeship framework requirements of a 90-credit qualification and must be taken by learners who are taking their qualification as part of the Higher-Level Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management.
What does the qualification cover?
The six pathways cover a wide range of topics including:
- Safeguarding and protection
- Developing and carrying out policy
- Managing care services, change programmes and recruitment
- Promoting and developing best practice
- Supporting development and partnership working
- Care management
- Quality systems and improvement
Who is it suitable for?
The Management pathway is suitable for Assistant Managers and Deputy Managers working in day or domiciliary services who are looking to progress their career. It is also appropriate for Managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at this level.
The Residential Services pathway is aimed at those in similar job roles as those taking the Management pathways but the focus is on management and care in residential settings.
The Advanced Practice pathway is geared towards senior practitioners who would like to develop their career but wish to remain active practitioners in the management framework.
What are the entry requirements?
Learners must be 19+ years old. The learner should also have completed a Level 3 qualification or above in this subject area.
What are the start dates?
This course can be started at any point of the year and sessions will be arranged with the learner. If you are making a group booking, sessions to suit the learners can be arranged at their place of work.
Do you need to be working to take the qualification?
Learners will need to be working in the role of Deputy or Manager in an appropriate setting, or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles to be able to study for the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (England) (90 credits).
How long does it take to complete?
It can usually be completed within a year.

What is the cost of this qualification?
This qualification costs £1350. If you are an adult social care agency you may be able to claim back the full cost of this course through the Workforce Development Fund.
